A plain-English guide

AI voice agents for Australian business, explained

An AI voice agent answers your business phone and talks with callers the way a good receptionist would. This guide covers what one does on a call, the two kinds on the market, what to check before you sign up in Australia, and what it costs.

What an AI voice agent is

An AI voice agent is software that answers phone calls and holds a real conversation. The caller speaks normally. The agent works out what they need, answers from your business’s own information, and gets the job done on the call: a booking, an order or a message.

It isn’t a phone menu. There’s no “press 2 for accounts”. Callers ask in their own words, change their mind or ask two things at once, and the agent keeps up. You’ll also hear it called an AI phone agent, an AI receptionist or an AI voice assistant for business.

What it does on a call

A good agent does more than take a message. Here’s what J-Voice Agent, our agent, handles from the first ring to the email you get afterwards.

Orders and messages are read back to the caller before the call ends, so the details are right. Then a summary lands in your inbox: who called, what they wanted and what to do next.

  • Answers every call, day or night, in an Australian voice
  • Answers questions from your own information: hours, prices, services, the areas you cover
  • Books appointments straight into Google Calendar or Outlook
  • Takes orders (items, quantities, pickup or delivery) and works out the total
  • Takes messages and emails them to you
  • Puts urgent callers through to your mobile
  • Remembers returning callers and picks up where the last call left off
  • Honours a caller’s request not to be called again

Build it yourself, or a managed agent

There are two broad kinds of product. Developer platforms give you the parts: speech, a language model, telephony and an API. You or a developer wire them together, write the prompts, connect your calendar and keep it all running. They’re flexible, and they suit businesses with technical staff.

A managed agent comes ready to answer calls. You describe your business, connect your calendar and test it. The provider looks after the voice, the phone side and the updates. It’s less flexible at the edges, but you don’t need a developer to run it.

Neither suits everyone. If you have a developer and an unusual workflow, a platform may fit. If you want the phone answered properly without a project, a managed agent usually makes more sense. J-Voice Agent is a managed agent from an Australian team.

What to check before you choose one in Australia

Most demos sound good. The differences show up on real calls from real Australians, so test it yourself before you sign up.

Ring it from a mobile, somewhere noisy, and talk the way your customers do. Say your suburb, ask something it shouldn’t know, then ask for a person. These are the questions worth answering first.

  • Voice and accents: does it sound Australian, and does it follow broad accents, fast talkers and local place names?
  • A local number: will your callers reach it on an Australian number?
  • Handover: how does it put a caller through to a person, and what happens if nobody answers?
  • When it can’t help: does it take a proper message, or does the call just end?
  • Pricing: per minute, a flat monthly plan, or both? What does a busy month cost?
  • Lock-in: is there a minimum term, a setup fee or an exit fee?

Privacy questions to ask

Calls carry personal information: names, numbers, addresses, sometimes health details. The Privacy Act 1988 and the Australian Privacy Principles cover many businesses, including health service providers of any size, so know how a provider handles that information before you send callers to it.

Ask every provider these questions, us included, and get the answers in writing.

  • Where are recordings, transcripts and summaries kept?
  • Who on the provider’s side can access them?
  • How long are they kept, and can you delete them?
  • Are your calls used to train anyone’s AI models?
  • Which other companies process the audio or the transcript?

What an AI voice agent costs

Providers tend to charge in one of two ways: a rate per minute, or a monthly plan with minutes included. Per-minute pricing suits low, steady volumes. A monthly plan is easier to budget, as long as the rate for extra minutes is clear.

J-Voice Agent uses monthly plans, in AUD with GST included. Extra minutes are 30c each and there are no lock-in contracts. Orders and transfers come with every plan. Calendar booking and caller memory come with the paid plans, and HubSpot call logging with Growth and Premium.

Questions

J-Voice Agent does. Every plan includes an Australian voice, and Growth and Premium add more voices to choose from. You can also add local names, such as suburbs, streets or products, to the words it listens for, so it’s better at hearing them.

It puts them through to your mobile. You answer and press 1 to take the call. If nobody answers, the caller goes back to the agent and leaves a message, which is emailed to you with a summary of the call.

Yes, on paid plans. It checks your Google Calendar or Outlook while the caller is on the line, offers open times and books the one they choose. The booking is in your calendar before they hang up.

No. The onboarding wizard takes you through it online: it asks about your business, builds the agent and lets you test-call it before it answers real customers. If you’d rather talk it through, book a call with our team.

No. Plans are billed monthly in AUD with GST included. You can start on the free plan with 15 minutes and no credit card, then move to Starter, Growth or Premium when you’re ready.
